What's In Your Carpet? How Often Should Carpets be Cleaned?

Published: July 17, 2014

Carpeting and area rugs add a softness and beauty to your floors that you just don’t get with hard floors. Carpets and Oriental rugs are an expensive investment and can last for years if properly cared for.

We at Greenway Carpet Care are often asked how often carpets should be cleaned. A few customers have them professionally cleaned every 6 months to a year for maintenance, but most wait until carpets are full of illness-promoting contaminants such as ground-in dirt (and dust mites), food particles, pesticides, pollen, bacteria and viruses, skin cells, bed bugs, fleas, insect parts and droppings, pet dander, mold spores and other allergens.

At Greenway Carpet Care, Inc., we recommend waiting no longer than a year to keep your indoor air healthy and prolong the life of your carpets. After all, the longer spills and ground-in soil sits, the harder it will be to remove. If a family member has allergies, it is wise to clean every 6 months. Following are tips for keeping your carpets looking fresh and clean.

  1. Vacuum thoroughly and frequently - especially in high-traffic areas. Most of the soil in your carpet is loose, dry dirt that works its way down to the backing. This sandy, gritty dirt can have sharp edges that damage carpet fiber, so it wears faster. You want to remove it while it is still on the surface.
  2. Using indoor AND outdoor mats at entrances to your home or business reduces the amount of dirt, pesticides, and pollen tracked in.
  3. Leave your outdoor shoes at the door. Easier said than done, but this definitely works to keep your carpet clean – unless your feet are dirty from going barefoot outside!
  4. Remove spills immediately before they become a stain (which, by definition, is permanent).
  5. Rotate furniture occasionally to prevent carpet wear and soiling in traffic areas; especially in front of the sofa.
  6. Have carpets professionally cleaned with a green and dry process since steam cleaning and carpet shampoo machines often causes rapid re-soiling.
